What is an X interaction circle, and what does it actually measure?
Published
An X interaction circle is a picture of the accounts one account publicly talks with most, arranged by closeness around its profile photo. It is built from recent replies, quotes, mentions and reposts, so it measures public conversation, not followers, likes or direct messages. It is unrelated to Twitter Circle, the audience setting X removed in 2023.
They show up in timelines every few months: a profile photo in the middle, dozens of smaller ones around it, and a caption tagging the closest three. The format is simple, which is why it keeps coming back. What is behind it is worth two minutes.
A picture of conversation, not of an audience
Most numbers on a profile describe an audience: followers, views, likes. An interaction circle describes something smaller and more personal, the handful of accounts you actually go back and forth with. Two people with the same follower count can have completely different circles, one made of a tight group that replies to each other daily, the other of strangers passing through.
The idea took off around 2020 with the first Twitter interaction circle generators, and every version since works the same way underneath: read recent public posts, count who appears in them, rank, draw.
The four things that count
- Replies. You answered them, or they answered you. The strongest signal, because a reply is a deliberate act aimed at one person.
- Quotes. You shared their post with your own comment on top.
- Mentions. You wrote their name in a post that was not a reply to them.
- Reposts. You passed their post along without comment. The lightest signal of the four.
Each one links two accounts in one direction. A good generator keeps track of that direction, because "I reply to them and they never answer" and "we talk every day" are not the same relationship. How the four are weighed against each other is explained in how an interaction score is built.
What it leaves out
Everything that is not public. Likes stopped being visible to other people in 2024. Direct messages never were. Follows say nothing about whether two people talk. Private accounts cannot be read at all. So the circle is honest about one thing, public conversation, and silent about the rest. If your closest friend on the platform is someone you only message privately, they will not be in it, and that is the tool working correctly.
It is also recent. Generators read a few hundred posts, not ten years of history. For someone who posts all day that covers a week; for a quiet account, several months. The full list of reasons a person can be absent is in why someone is missing from your circle.
Not to be confused with Twitter Circle
From 2022 to 2023 the app had a feature called Twitter Circle: you picked up to 150 people and could publish posts only they would see. X retired it on 31 October 2023. Searches for "X circle" still mix the two, but they have nothing in common beyond the word. One was a privacy setting. The other is a picture.
How to read one
- Start from the middle. The accounts nearest the centre are the ones with the most recent, two-way exchange.
- Look at the edge with suspicion. The outer positions are often decided by one or two posts. Tomorrow they may be different people.
- Check the direction. If the tool shows how many interactions came from each side, a person with ten from you and none back is someone you talk at, not with.
- Remember the date. It is a snapshot. Make it again in a month and compare.
Common questions
Is an X circle the same as the old Twitter Circle feature?
No. Twitter Circle was a setting inside the app that let you post to a hand-picked group of up to 150 people; it was switched off on 31 October 2023. An interaction circle is a picture made by a third-party tool from public posts. The two only share a name.
Does an interaction circle show who my best friends are?
It shows who you exchanged public posts with recently. That often overlaps with friends, but it also includes a company you complained to and leaves out everyone you only talk to in direct messages.
Can other people see my circle?
Only if you share it. The picture is made on request from posts anyone can already read, and nothing is published on your behalf.
It is free and needs no login. Make your X circle and see who is closest to you.
