Why someone you talk to is missing from your X circle
Published
A person is missing from an X circle when your exchanges with them are not public, not recent enough, or outnumbered. Likes and direct messages cannot be read, only a few hundred recent posts are counted, and older interactions lose weight every month. Private or renamed accounts and one-sided conversations are the other common causes.
You make your circle expecting a particular face near the middle, and it is not there. It is the most common question about these pictures, and it almost always has one of six answers.
1. You talk in private
Direct messages are invisible to everything except the two people in them. So are likes, which X made private in 2024, and bookmarks. If most of what passes between you and someone is DMs and likes, there is nothing public to count. This is the usual reason a real-life friend is absent while a stranger you argued with once is present.
2. It was too long ago
A circle reads a limited number of recent posts, typically a few hundred, and never further than about four months back. How much time that covers depends on how much you post. Twenty posts a day fills the quota in two or three weeks; two posts a week reaches the four-month limit first. A long conversation from last winter is simply outside the window.
3. It was recent, but it has faded
Inside the window, newer counts for more. A common rule halves the weight of an interaction every 30 days, which means one reply from this week is worth about the same as four from two months ago. Someone you talked to intensely in the summer can be overtaken by someone you have exchanged three posts with since Monday.
4. Their account is private, renamed or gone
- Private accounts cannot be read. Your replies to them may still be counted from your side, but theirs to you are not, so they score low or not at all.
- Renamed accounts can split in two if a tool matches people by username. Tools that use the permanent account ID keep them together.
- Suspended and deleted accounts disappear along with their posts.
5. It only goes one way
Good scoring rewards reciprocity. If you reply to a big account every day and it has never answered, those replies still count, but far less than the same number split between you and someone who answers back. A person you talk at ranks below a person you talk with, on purpose.
6. The other side could not be read that day
Seeing who talks to you depends on searching posts by other people. When that search is not available, a tool can only see your own posts and the replies directly under them. Quotes and plain mentions of you are lost for that run, and the people who interact with you mostly that way drop out. If the page tells you the picture comes from your own posts only, try again later.
What you can do
- Reply in public. One real reply does more than ten likes, because the likes do not count at all.
- Make the circle again after a conversation, not before. It is a snapshot of the moment you press the button.
- Show more people. If the person is just below the cut, a larger circle brings them in.
- Take out accounts that do not belong. Removing a brand or a bot you replied to once moves everyone below it up a place.
Common questions
Can I add someone to my circle by hand?
No. The picture only contains accounts that appear in the posts that were read. You can remove people, and the next ones in the ranking move in, but you cannot insert someone the data does not show.
Will liking someone's posts put them in my circle?
No. Likes are not public, so no tool outside X can read them. Reply to them instead: a reply is the interaction that counts the most.
How long until a new conversation shows up?
Immediately. The circle is computed from the posts that exist at the moment you make it, so a reply you sent a minute ago is already counted.
